Not Six Minute (NSM) Data Retrieval (or how to retrieve NCEP model data)

The NCEP model data we use to generate forecasts is stored in our "next generation" database format, presently called "Not Six Minute" (NSM). We couldn't agree on a more imaginative name.

Presently all the NSM data is stored and accessed through wip.cbi.tamucc.edu instead of lighthouse.cbi.tamucc.edu.

An up-to-date list of NCEP model data we are archiving:

The historical data availability graph (at the bottom of the overview page) shows the start/end times for each model location.

On the data retrieval page (click on the Data Query tab), you will need to click on a hidden link. When your mouse pointer is over the link, it will turn white (i.e., become visible). Currently this does not work in Internet Explorer:

The visible link will look like this:

When you click on the link, more query options will appear:

Parameters

  • DSpecList - This is where you specify a combination of source, series, location, and offset (optional). If you are only retrieving one series, you can use separate fields instead.
  • Location - The geographic location.
  • Offset - Prediction offset, in hours. E.g., offset=9 will only retrieve 9 hour predictions.
  • MaxOffset - Maximum prediction offset (inclusive), in hours. E.g., maxoffset=9 will retrieve all 9 hours or earlier predictions.

Information on updates to the NAM model

Offset and MaxOffset are mutually exclusive options.
